As a freelancer 10 characteristics, you need!

Features as freelancer

1. High level of responsibility

freelancer In contrast to a permanent position, we are always one-hundred per cent liable for our own actions. There are no colleagues or bosses available to assign blame. Therefore, even if something goes wrong, we have to be ready to take full responsibility.

2. A lot of passion for freelance work

Half-hearted work leads to half-hearted results. Only if we carry out our freelance work with full passion can we achieve top performance and be successful. We should therefore always be clear why we chose freelance work. What is our drive/motivation? Why do we care what we do?

3. Keep the financial overview

The topic of “finance” is essential for the success of our freelance work. If we want to be successful, we should regularly review income and expenses, as well as reserves. A well-designed financial plan helps with this.

4. Have a clear goal in mind

We are regularly faced with detailed tasks in everyday life. Write an offer here, rework a project there and so on. In doing so, we can quickly lose sight of our own goals, or even fail to define our goals in the first place. It is extremely important to have goals. This is the only way we can make progress and, looking back, can measure our success. You can find out how to define goals with the  SMART method in my article:  »Formulating goals with the SMART method«

5. Freelance work requires a lot of discipline

Everything does not always go smoothly when we achieve our goals. Sometimes we are literally put in the way. For example, orders burst, unplanned high tax payments that eliminate our profits or other unplanned events. Even in times of crisis, it is important to stay on the ball. We cannot just throw the shotgun into the grain. Discipline is, therefore, an essential quality that we should have if we want to work successfully as a freelancer.

6. Good time management

Freelancers, especially those who work from home, need very good time management. Our working hours are not specified by the employer. We, therefore, have to find times ourselves when we concentrate on processing orders, bringing our accounting up to scratch or updating our website. Find out what time of day or what day you are most productive and plan your daily routines.

7. Focus

Most freelancers strive to process your orders as efficiently as possible. After all, time is money. In order to work as efficiently as possible, it is important to be able to concentrate on one thing (keyword »focus«). During my productive times, I am therefore not available by phone. I also only open the e-mail inbox and the internet browser if I need it to implement the project I’m currently working on. Book Tip: The Power Of Focus (Affiliate Link)

8. Qualification

Without appropriate proof of our qualifications (e.g. training, studies, awards, references or portfolio), customers find it difficult to trust our services. It is therefore important to always work on our qualifications and to communicate them clearly to our customers or our target group. Personally, I find it important to be open to new topics.

9. Ability to cooperate

As a freelancer, you can certainly get started without outside help. However, it is easier to be cooperative. Cooperations offer incredible potential. For example, a cooperation partner can compensate for its own weaknesses with its strengths. Sometimes completely new business models result from clever collaborations. Loners can also be successful. Thanks to good cooperation, the path is often less rocky.

10. Readiness for lifelong learning

In line with the motto “If you rest, you rust”, I always try to keep my specialist knowledge up-to-date. As a designer, this applies to me in particular for new design trends, technologies and software. Are there any areas where you want to refresh your knowledge?
